How NEET Rank is Calculated in 2026
NEET rank is determined by the total marks scored out of 720, where each correct answer fetches +4 marks and each wrong answer deducts 1 mark (unanswered questions carry no penalty). The National Testing Agency (NTA) assigns the All India Rank (AIR) by sorting all qualified candidates in descending order of marks.
When two or more candidates score equal marks, NTA applies a tie-breaking mechanism in this order: higher marks in Biology, then higher marks in Chemistry, then fewer wrong answers overall, and finally the older candidate ranks higher. This makes Biology the single most important subject for rank determination among equal scorers.
NEET 2026 Expected Cutoff for MBBS
The NEET qualifying cutoff is the minimum score required to appear in counselling — but this is very different from the admission cutoff required to actually secure an MBBS seat. The admission cutoff for government MBBS seats (AIQ) for General category has historically been above 600 marks, while state quota government seats close between 450–580 depending on the state.
Category-wise Expected Qualifying Cutoff 2026
Based on trends from 2021–2025, the expected qualifying cutoffs for NEET 2026 are: General/EWS — 164 marks (50th percentile); OBC-NCL, SC, ST — 129 marks (40th percentile); PwD (UR) — 143 marks (45th percentile). These are minimum qualifying marks and do not guarantee an MBBS seat.
What Can I Do with Rank X? Options Beyond Government MBBS

- Rank 1,000–15,000: Top government colleges, AIIMS newer campuses, state quota MBBS

- Rank 60,000–1,50,000: Private MBBS, BDS, and MBBS Abroad (Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan)
- Rank above 1,50,000: MBBS Abroad, BAMS, BHMS, BDS, B.Sc Nursing, Allied Health Sciences
