North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov (NWSMU) was founded on October 12, 2011 as a result of the merger of the two oldest educational medical institutions in Russia - St. Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education and St. Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I. I.I. Mechnikov.

The founder of the University is the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

The activity of the University is based on close cooperation and coordination of educational, clinical and research activities - this allows training competent specialists who have modern knowledge and are able to apply it in practice.

One of the main goals of the University staff is to create new knowledge in medicine and biology and to introduce the results of fundamental and applied research into clinical practice and medical education.

The priority result of scientific research of the North-Western State Medical University is the creation of innovations, introduced into practical activities, demanded by the market of medical services and providing a qualitative increase in efficiency. Over the past 5 years, North-Western State Medical University has become a leader in the number of patents for inventions and utility models among medical universities and has more than 120 innovative developments that are being implemented in clinical, diagnostic, preventive and organizational work of medical institutions.

Scientific developments at the North-Western State Medical University are carried out jointly with more than 50 leading universities and research institutes of St. Petersburg, Russia and foreign countries, with 60 medical institutions, 25 pharmaceutical companies.

The results of scientific research of employees of the University named after I.I. Mechnikov are published in their own journals published at the University: " Emergency Medical Aid" (State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles - SCADT), "Russian family doctor", "Vestnik NWGMU" (SCADT), "Problems of medical mycology" (SCADT), "Preventive and clinical medicine" (SCADT).

    Master program for medical schools graduates and concerned persons with higher non-medical education!


    The Master program with the specialization 32.04.01 Public Health is opened from September 01, 2014 in the State budget institution of higher education North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov as a priority direction of higher education development.
     

    Master program is the second level of the higher education system, created in the process of reforming the Russian education system within the Bologna process. The Master program provides the in-depth theoretical training of student. The core area of Master program "Public health" implies the in-depth training of graduates for research, scientific, industrial and professional activities. Hence, a lawyer, an economist, and a designer, if he is going to work in the field of public health can get the missing knowledge and in truth become a unique and highly paid professional.

    The aim of new Master program is to train professionals with a wide range of basic disciplines to implement scientifically-based professional activities in the field of public health. As well they should be capable to carry out integrated assessment and monitoring of the population health status, to identify the determinants of public health, to work out measures to preserve and improve the population health, to implement them in practice and to evaluate their effectiveness.

    Master program at NWSMU n.a. I.I.  Mechnikov is developed under the federal state educational standard of higher professional education in the specialization 060400 Public Health (qualification (degree) "Master"). Training content corresponds to the requirements of the Master program in Public Health (Master of Public Health, MPH) in European countries.

    The program is harmonized not only with the leading European analogs, as well with the Master program of The University of Illinois Chicago, Illinois (United States of Americaincluding the requirements of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER).

    Great work preceded to the opening of new Master program. The North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov together with two Universities in Norway have signed an agreement, which provides the participation of professors from the European universities in the educational process at our University. Good command of English give the possibility to complete the semester training at the University of Oslo.

    At completion of the Master program in NWSMU n.a. I.I. Mechnikov the graduate get a state-recognized Diploma, which provides an opportunity of employment both in the territory of the Russian Federation and in a series of European countries
     

    Citizens of the Russian Federation and foreign citizens with higher education are accepted for completion of Master program 32.04.01 "Public health". Applicant submits on his own the original or a certified copy of his Diploma of Specialist (Specialist Degree), Bachelor or Master degree. For admission it is necessary to pass the test in Public Health.

    The standard term of development of the full-time education is 2 years. Preparation of Masters on distance learning or part-time (evening) form of training is not provided.

Annually, the NWSMU clinics provide highly qualified medical care to more than 40,000 inpatients and 400,000 outpatients.

Medical services are provided by the most advanced high-resolution digital MRIs and CT scanners, angiography and X-ray equipment, cardiac mapping systems, expert-level ultrasound machines, and digital automated laboratory analysers.

The Department of Clinical Molecular Morphology, with a throughput of up to 1,000 samples per day, enables the most accurate immunohistochemistry and intravital morphodiagnostics studies.

A multidisciplinary medical centre for the differential diagnosis of lymphadenopathies plays an important role in the treatment and diagnosis process. A wide range of morphological examinations for the verification of oncological diseases, autoimmune diseases etc. are carried out in the Centre.

University Alumni Meeting in India

On May 13, the University Alumni Meeting was held in cooperation with our partners in India. Our former students and residents who returned home to work in the Indian healthcare system joined the event. Today, many of them hold senior positions in leading clinics and healthcare organisations. All participants warmly reminisced their student years, life in St. Petersburg, and, most importantly, noted that the knowledge and skills they acquired during studies helped them to build a successful career in India. It is worth mentioning that during the meeting all graduates spoke Russian, which they learned at the University.
